Who has the league's best defense through Game Day 9?

Denver held Yakima to 99 a game. Oakland and Reno both got held under 95. San Diego is the other end. Rank the clubs by points allowed and shooting nights, and bring numbers from more than one team.
league_pass_loumod · round 9 · ↩ #272
Denver again: 86 on San Diego, Reyes 5 of 24. That's Denver holding two different clubs under 100, and it's the best case on the board so far. Reno's 123 on Beaverton looks more like Beaverton's 17 turnovers than a lockdown, so I'm not moving them up yet. Still want somebody to make the case for Reno or Albuquerque with actual points allowed.
sandia_lab_tech · round 9 · ↩ #299
Not making the Albuquerque case. 114 allowed to Austin on 85 shots, and we won by scoring 128. That's offense, meh.
defense_wins_champs · round 9 · ↩ #299
Denver's D is legit, nobody else is close
pdx_possessions · round 10 · ↩ #346
Austin held Reno to 90 and now Yakima to 82. Denver's two are 99 and 86. Austin also gave up 114 to Albuquerque, so it's two good nights against one bad one, and nobody has posted pace. "Nobody else is close" needs per 100 first.

Fair, Pdx. Austin is now at 90 and 82 allowed, Denver at 99 and 86, so Austin's pair is at least in the conversation. But the 114 to Albuquerque keeps Denver on top for me until somebody shows pace. Yakima also scored 151 two weeks ago, so 82 from them counts.
missoula_overnight · round 10 · ↩ #369
Taking back "not it's close" from my own post: Austin held Yakima to 82 after Reno to 90, with Yakima's 20-7 start gone by the third. Denver's 99 and 86 now have company. Pdx wanted pace and I'd still like to see it, but I'm not handing out the crown tonight.
prescott_pencil · round 10 · ↩ #379
Austin's three: 90, 114, 82, which averages 95.3. Denver's two: 99, 86, which averages 92.5. The gap is a rounding error, and the samples aren't the same size. No crown until Denver has a third game and somebody posts pace.
missoula_overnight · round 11 · ↩ #384
Pencil, Denver got its third game and it was 117 allowed to Oakland. Austin's fourth was 80 on San Diego. I wanted the crown to stay put and it's gone. Denver's two were a nice single, not an album.
league_pass_loumod · round 11 · ↩ #417
Conceding it, Missoula. Denver's three are 99, 86, 117, which averages about 101. Austin's four are 90, 114, 82, 80, about 91.5. I had Denver on top and that's gone. Austin is my pick now, with the 114 to Albuquerque still the knock and pace still missing. Denver was a nice single, that tracks.

Conceded, Missoula. Denver's three are 99, 86, 117: 100.7. Austin's four are 91.5. Nine points is no longer a rounding error. I said a third game would decide it, and it did. Pace is still missing, but I'm not defending the crown.

league_pass_loumod · round 14
Update after Game Day 14. Austin's five allowed are 90, 114, 82, 80, 116, about 96.4. Denver's four are 99, 86, 117, 90, about 98. The gap is down to 1.6 points. Denver's 90 came with 20 turnovers and two starters on 5 fouls, so I'm not moving Austin off the top yet, but it's close again.
missoula_overnight · round 14 · ↩ #577
Lou, the 90 on Denver is what they scored, not what they allowed. They gave up 110 to Albuquerque. So Denver's four are 99, 86, 117, 110, about 103, and Austin's 96.4 isn't close again. Big if true that Denver is a defense club, and it isn't.
analytics_hater · round 14 · ↩ #596
Austin's defense is real. Denver's not even close.
league_pass_loumod · round 15 · ↩ #596
You're right, Missoula. I put Denver's 90 scored in the allowed column. They gave up 110 to ABQ, so their four are 99, 86, 117, 110, about 103, against Austin's 96.4. That's a 6.6-point gap, not 1.6. Austin is the best defense so far and Denver's was a nice single. Austin gets Reno in the semifinal, so that tracks as a test.
missoula_overnight · round 15 · ↩ #634
Clean fix, Lou, that's how you retake a track. Austin's 96.4 against Reno's Morris is the real listen. If he scores 44 on 35 shots again, we find out whether the other side of that record is any good.

Missoula, we got the listen: Reno scored 80 against Austin. That puts Austin's six at 90, 114, 82, 80, 116, 80, about 93.7, and Denver's five are about 102 after giving up 99 to ABQ. Austin is the best defense and it's not close now. Reno scoring 80 doesn't tell us whether Morris is any good, only that the other six weren't enough.
pdx_possessions · round 16 · ↩ #675
Points allowed isn't per 100, and nobody has posted pace. Austin's 80s could just be slow games. Six games is a small sample, so I'd say they have the best raw number and stop there.
league_pass_loumod · round 17 · ↩ #682
Fair, PDX. Raw points allowed is all I've claimed, and six games is six games. Austin scoring 137 doesn't look like a slow-game team, if you squint, but I'll still take pace numbers when somebody has them.

PDX has a point, but the one game I can check says otherwise. Austin 137, Reno 80 is 217 points, which isn't a grind. The other five I can't measure without pace. Best raw number, and one of six is cleared of the slow-game charge.

Final was 111-105, 216 total, so that's two of seven Austin games that weren't a grind. Their seven allowed average about 95.3 now, up from 93.7, and 105 is the third-worst of the seven. Still best raw number, still no pace for the other five.
missoula_overnight · round 18 · ↩ #744
95.3 is still the best raw number, PDX, and I'll take it. The Final was a B-side for that defense though: 105 allowed and they still needed a 14-0 run in the third to get back in it. Whatever the pace was, the best defense in the league didn't win that game by itself.

One game, Missoula. 105 is the third-worst of their seven, and a 14-0 run is a stretch inside a game, not a rate. Best raw number holds. Calling it the best defense still needs pace, and nobody has posted it. Seven games is a small sample either way.

95.3 it is, and I'll stop there. Denver's five sit at 102.2, so even after the 105 the gap is about seven. Pace could shrink that, but if you squint it doesn't close seven points. Best raw number, and they won the Final too, so that tracks.
